Women's A Cappella Chorus Wins Area Competition

Kirkwood: St. Louis Vocal Project, a women's a cappella chorus based in Kirkwood, Missouri, brought home the first place trophy from the Harmony Incorporated competition in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, on June 8, 2024. The chorus's high score qualifies it to compete at the annual International Competition in Louisville, Kentucky, in November.

This is the third consecutive year that the chorus has placed first in the Harmony Incorporated Area 4 contest, which brings together choruses from eight states in the upper Midwest plus California. In addition to the chorus competition, the contest includes a competition for quartets, and Vocal Project's newest quartet, Oasis, brought home a trophy for the highest scoring novice quartet.

Harmony Incorporated is an international organization of women's choruses who sing a cappella music in the style known as "barbershop", famous for intricate arrangements and close-knit four-part harmonies of songs from all genres.

"We are all dedicated to this art form, even though about half of the chorus members are new to barbershop singing," says director Sandi Wright. "We're also good friends, we have fun, and we just love singing together!"

St. Louis Vocal Project is available for local performances and is interested in growing its membership. The next rehearsal is Wednesday, June 26, 7:00-9:00 pm, at the First Congregational Church, 10 West Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO, 63119. Women singers from the St. Louis area are invited to attend.
